This gets the hair to a uniform and manageable length in preparation for the second pass. The second pass should reduce hair length to a quarter of an inch (6 mm) or less while maintaining its uniform length. We want to end up with hair that is short enough that a razor can easily handle it. Imagine if you are shaving after having skipped a couple of days. That's a situation most razors can easily handle. In a pinch the two passes can be reduced to one and the "beard trimmer" attachment of a men's electric shaver can be used instead of the hair clipper. But the "two passes with the hair clipper" method is easy to do well even for the novice. What happens when you try to shave hair that is too long is amply demonstrated in the video. The technician struggles to get her razor to work. She has to redo the same spot over and over. Her razor is completely clogged up a lot of the time. Making many passes over the same spot with her razor is very hard on Silvie's skin. It looks very dry at the end and I bet it was quite irritated. The shaving cream used with a regular razor softens the hairs and lubricates the skin. Electric razors work better if the hair is not soft but lubrication is still important. So a pre-shave product like Lectric Shave that is designed for use with electric razors should be applied. As noted above an electric razor cuts hair short but not as short as a regular razor. And that is good enough for many. But for best results a second pass with a regular razor should be made. By now that the hair is quite short only a small amount of shaving cream is necessary. This eliminates the clogging problem. And only one or a small number of passes over any one spot is needed. This minimizes skin irritation. The electric razor pass can, of course, be skipped. But this pass is also easy for a novice to do well. A regular razor can still do a fine job even if the electric razor pass is skipped but the cost is usually increased skin irritation. (more passes over the same spot are usually required to get the same super-smooth result.) Regular razors are also more likely to nick or pinch. This regular razor pass is the one that takes the most skill and care to perform well. But most of us manage it.
